5 things to know about Hair Extensions

Hair Extensions

Have you ever wondered how celebrities go from short hair to lush, long hair overnight?

Hair extensions have been around for a long time and they are only getting better.

Not sure where to start? We have made a guide to help you get started.

1. GET THE RIGHT QUALITY

Have you ever heard of Remy Hair?

These are the highest quality hair extensions available and the hair cuticle on the hair is all facing the same way which prevents tangles and matting in this type of hair. Remy hair is closest to your real hair, so the hair holds styles the same way as your natural hair and won’t shed as much as the cheaper options.

Avoid synthetic extensions even if they look the most affordable. They tangle easily and have a super high shine, which makes them look obviously unnatural.

2. CHOOSE THE RIGHT COLOUR

Colour matching is very important to get the ends right for a seamless blend if your hair is all one colour.

The roots can be slightly off as they will be hidden anyway. Be sure to go with the colour that is most prominent in your hair.

If your hair is highlighted, opt for a highlighted extension or mix two extension colours together.

Not sure what colour you are? You can send the Instyle Hair Extensions team a photo of your hair colour and they will colour match it for you.

3. WHAT'S YOUR EXTENSION TYPE?

There are a few types of hair extensions that you can opt for, so let us help you choose what’s right for you.

Hair Scrunchie

Hair Scrunchies - Suitable for beginners. If you can tie your hair in a hair tie, you can apply this. The scrunchie wraps around your own hair tie and you can blend it with the remainder of your own ponytail. Great for adding fullness to short or fine hair.

Clip in Hair Extensions

Clip in extensions -These can be clipped in and out for length and fullness whenever you need them. Also great for formal or bridal hairstyles as they can be placed to suit the chosen hairstyle on your big day.

Halo Hair Extension

Halo extensions- The halo only has two clips and once the string is blended, it will sit comfortably in your hair all day.

Ponytail Hair Extension

Ponytail extensions- The ponytail extension has velcro which wraps around your natural ponytail and provides length and fullness all at once. Daily use only.

Tape Hair Extension

Tape extensions- Held in place with a premium tape and lasts up to 8 weeks. Must be installed by a hair professional.

4. LOOK AFTER YOUR EXTENSIONS

Just like your natural hair, hair extensions need washing and maintaining. Wash your clip-ins every six to eight times that you wear them, depending on how much product you’re using.

Gently comb out any product buildup and tangles and use a shampoo and conditioner free of sulfates and parabens. Lightly dry with a towel to remove excess water, then let them air dry. Wait until they’re mostly dry to use heat styling tools, and avoid using those directly on the tape.

Do not go to bed with wet hair—make sure your hair is totally dry before you hit the pillow.

5. KNOW WHEN TO SAY GOODBYE

When people say hair extensions are bad for your hair, this is because they haven’t been professionally removed at the right time. Hair extensions have time frames for a reason.

Tapes in particular grow out with your hair and need to be taken out just before the 8 week mark as your hair naturally sheds to avoid the tapes pulling on your hair as they become too heavy.

Hair extensions should not hurt or pull at your hair. If they do, go back to your hairstylist if they are tapes or simply unclip your clip ins or ponytail and move it a little as a piece of hair might be caught.

Hair extensions should last longer than 12 months if looked after properly (Clip In, Ponytail and Halo).

Be sure to store your extensions in a protective bag to avoid them being tangled when not in use.
